How I came to feel the Positive Effects of Increased Body Awareness
Over the last three years, I began to bring more awareness to my body in large part through self Reiki and physical movement. My own increase in body awareness helps me notice it in my Reiki clients and guide them to wellness.
I found it took me dedication and practice to bring accurate awareness to my body. I did not recognize how disconnected I was from my body. I was unaware of my own powerful capacity to move beyond pain in my own body. I was unable to honor my body’s own innate power to heal.
The game changer for me came from actually putting my hands on my own body and declaring that I would keep it safe. Afterwards, I promised to listen to what my body was telling me.
I distinctly remember that day. I was sitting on a bench in Villa Carpegna Park in Rome, Italy in the Spring time. I was comfortably tired after a long walk. The sky was crystal clear blue, flowers were blooming and the Roman green parrots were actively playing around me. Suddenly, I put my own hands on my pelvis and ovaries. I declared, “I’ve got you. I have got you.”
From that day onwards, I more readily noticed body pain and tension. I would then make immediate loving adjustments. Soon, I began to make new choices that made my body feel more at ease and joy filled.
Having this heightened body awareness seems to give me more control over how I am able to live day to day. I now enjoy an increased quality of life.
Body Awareness in Reiki Clients
The more I listen to my body, the more I know I am healing at deeper levels. At the same time, I see this body healing connection mirrored in my clients and know how to more effectively help them.
Interestingly, I am able to notice when my Reiki clients are having trouble connecting with or listening to their bodies. Subsequently, through consistent Reiki sessions and using my own experience of body connection I am able to guide them into gentle alignment with their body. I am then able to witness their body and mind integrate, so we can work at deeper healing levels.
Moreover, as clients connect more with their bodies their potential for healing increases more rapidly. Then I hear less about pain in their bodies and more about breakthrough ideas. Progressively, they come in with more confident postures and rested looking eyes.
Additionally, I begin to hear them talk about their feelings. They put their hands on their body parts connected with that emotion. At this time, I am able to work less on their body levels and more on energetic levels of consciousness where profound healing occurs.
Correspondingly, clients who are able to connect and listen to their bodies often experience healing breakthroughs in subsequent Reiki sessions that they were unable to attain before.
In the same fashion, I find that clients who learn Reiki level one more quickly connect to their bodies at heightened levels.
The Reiki Level one course combined with consistent Reiki sessions seems to allows them to lock-in sustainable long term wellness states that contribute to an overall higher quality of life.
Signs of Not Listening to The Body
Persistent pain.
Pain upon waking.
Getting sick more often (a lowered immune system).
Insomnia or trouble falling asleep.
Poor eating habits.
Overreacting emotionally due to physical exhaustion.
Bodily wounds from ignoring body pain prompts like blisters on the feet.
Signs That Body Awareness is Increasing
I found that I began taking the following actions without conscious or purposeful thought. The body was asking for them and I simply responded.
Noticing what part of the body is feeling pain or tension. Then taking immediate action to make it feel better. This is often as simple as changing sitting position, taking a quick walk break, or resting that body part.
Making bedroom, mattress and pillow adjustments that make sleep more comfortable.
Stretching the body upon waking and through out the day.
Sticking to a consistent sleep schedule became more of a priority because the body felt better.
At the first sign of tiredness or a sniffle- resting, eating immune boosting foods or taking appropriate medicines.
When an emotion arises, noting where it is in the body. Then moving, massaging or breathing into that part of the body.
Catching nervous/stress eating, and stopping.
Feeling more often when the body is full and not eating more.
The body feeling lighter and more flexible.
Decreased pain in the body, or pain that lasts less time, or is gone.
Increased ease and joy felt in the body.
Ways to Love and Connect to the Body
Daily Self Reiki.
Breath/Body Exercise- I close my eyes and put attention on my body parts starting from the top of my head to the bottom of my toes. At each body part I breath in and out.
I touch, hold, massage and stretch my body.
Moving my body with my favorite exercises, dance or stretching- a walk.
I eat what I am craving. I limit foods or drink that do not make my body feel good. Eating body nourishing foods whenever possible.
Talking to my body.
Dressing my body for comfort and protection.
I happily get a massage or other body work like chiropractic or do a Reiki trade when my body wants it.
I take medicines or vitamins that help my body perform at optimal levels.
I slow down and listen to my body first before taking action.
A small way to access how much you are truly listening to and loving your body is look at your current shoes.
Yes, that’s right. The state of shoes shows how much you listen to what your body needs.
Are your shoes old and worn? Are they fashionable verses comfortable? Are they in good condition and make your feet feel great?
“When I lovingly take care of my body and put it first, I heal at deeper levels and my quality of life improves exponentially.”
